Firearm Transfer Process
Transferring a firearm through Freedom Firearms is a straightforward, compliant process designed to ensure all federal and Texas state laws are followed. Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect.
Step 1: Contact Us Before Shipment
Before initiating a firearm transfer, please contact Freedom Firearms to notify us of your intent to transfer a firearm.
You can reach us by phone at 719-314-8303 or by email at info@freedomfirearmsusa.com. This allows us to confirm eligibility, answer questions, and ensure a smooth transfer.
Step 2: Gather Required Information
To facilitate the transfer, we will need the following information:
Your full legal name and contact information
Firearm details (make, model, caliber, and serial number)
A copy of the sending FFL’s license
Any relevant purchase documentation (receipt or invoice)
Having this information ready helps minimize delays once the firearm arrives.
Step 3: Arrange Firearm Shipment
Once coordination is complete, arrange for the firearm to be shipped to Freedom Firearms.
Important shipping requirements:
Firearms must be shipped from a valid FFL holder
A copy of the sending FFL license must be included in the shipment
Customers are responsible for coordinating shipment with the seller or transferring dealer
Tracking Information (Strongly Recommended):
We strongly recommend requesting a tracking number from the sending FFL or seller and providing it to us once available. Not all FFLs automatically send tracking information unless it is specifically requested.
Providing a tracking number allows us to:
Monitor inbound shipments
Prepare for intake and secure storage
Reduce delays once the firearm arrives
All shipments must comply with applicable federal and Texas state firearm laws.
Step 4: Visit Freedom Firearms to Initiate the Transfer
Once the firearm has been delivered to our location, you must visit Freedom Firearms in person to begin the transfer process.
During your visit, we will:
Verify firearm and shipment details
Complete ATF Form 4473
Submit the required background check through the FBI NICS system, as required by law
Transfer Fees & Pricing
Our transfer fees reflect the administrative work, compliance requirements, secure storage, and liability involved in processing firearm transfers.
Transfer Pricing
$40 — Texas LTC Holders
$50 — Non-LTC Holders
Why the Difference?
Texas License to Carry (LTC) holders receive a reduced transfer fee due to:
Prior vetting through the Texas Department of Public Safety
Streamlined verification during the transfer process
Reduced processing time and administrative overhead
Non-LTC transfers require additional verification and processing time, which is reflected in the standard transfer fee.
All transfer fees are due at the time paperwork is initiated and are non-refundable, regardless of background check outcome.
Step 5: Complete Transfer Paperwork
Before leaving our premises, ensure all required paperwork is completed accurately, including:
ATF Form 4473
Valid government-issued photo identification
Any additional documentation required by federal or Texas state law
Incomplete or incorrect information may result in delays or denial.
Step 6: Background Check & Final Determination
All firearm transfers require a background check conducted through the FBI NICS system.
Background check results may include:
Approved – You may take possession of the firearm
Delayed – Additional time is required for review
Denied – The firearm cannot be transferred
Freedom Firearms has no control over NICS determinations. All decisions are made by the FBI in accordance with federal and Texas state law.
If a delay occurs, we will notify you once a final determination is received.
Step 7: Take Possession of the Firearm
Once the background check is approved and all paperwork has been completed, you may take possession of the firearm.
Firearms cannot be released without an approved background check.
Firearm Storage Policy
Firearms transferred to Freedom Firearms are securely stored upon receipt at no additional charge during the normal background check timeframe.
A storage fee may apply in situations outside of the standard background check process, including but not limited to:
Failure to schedule or attend a pickup appointment after approval
Incomplete paperwork or missing documentation
Customer-requested delays or extended holds
Transfers not completed due to customer inaction
Storage Fee
$10 per day, beginning after notification of approval or readiness for pickup
Storage fees cover secure storage, handling, and administrative oversight.
Firearms left unclaimed for extended periods may be handled in accordance with ATF regulations and Texas law.
Important Transfer Policy Notice
Firearms must be legally transferable under federal and Texas law
Transfer fees cover administrative processing, secure handling, recordkeeping, and compliance
Transfer fees do not guarantee approval and are non-refundable once paperwork has been initiated
Firearms cannot be released without an approved background check
